When it comes to making the most of your custom pool, nothing brings more energy and excitement than pool games—especially for the kids. At Emerald Custom Pools, we believe your pool should be a place where memories are made, and that includes plenty of laughter, splashing, and friendly competition. Whether you’re planning a family pool party or just looking for ways to keep the little ones entertained, here are some of the best pool games that are perfect for kids of all ages.

1. Marco Polo

A classic for a reason! One player closes their eyes and calls out “Marco!” while the others respond with “Polo!” The goal? Use only sound to tag someone else. It’s a fun way to sharpen listening skills and gets everyone moving.

2. Sharks and Minnows

One “shark” starts in the middle of the pool while the rest of the players (the minnows) line up on one end. When the shark calls “Minnows, cross!” the race begins—and any minnow tagged becomes a shark. The game continues until there’s only one minnow left!

3. Treasure Hunt

Toss dive rings, coins, or pool-safe toys into the water and let the kids search and collect them. This one’s great for building underwater confidence and gives a little adventure to pool time.

Pro tip: Use toys of different colors and assign point values for a competitive twist.

4. Pool Noodle Jousting

Set up two pool floats and hand each contestant a pool noodle. Let them “joust” by gently trying to knock each other off their float. Just be sure there’s adult supervision and a safe area of the pool for this splashy battle!

5. Freeze Tag (Pool Edition)

Just like the land version—but in the water! One child is “it” and must tag others to freeze them in place. Teammates can unfreeze their friends by swimming under their legs. It’s fast-paced, silly fun that works best in shallow areas.

6. Whirlpool Challenge

For smaller groups in a circular pool or spa area, have everyone walk (or swim) in the same direction to create a whirlpool. Then try to walk the opposite direction—it’s tougher than it sounds and hilarious to watch!

7. Cannonball Contest

Who can make the biggest splash? Let the kids take turns showing off their best cannonball (or other creative jumps) while judges rate them on splash size, style, or air time. Bonus points for silly names and commentary!

Pool Game Safety Tips

While games keep the pool exciting, safety always comes first. Here are a few reminders:

  • Always supervise children in the pool.

  • Ensure everyone knows basic swimming skills.

  • Use floatation devices for younger or less confident swimmers.

  • Set clear rules for diving and jumping areas.
